Freshly has officially been certified gluten-free by the Gluten Intolerance Group, making Freshly the largest fresh-prepared-meal delivery company to be officially certified. Yeah, we’re preeetty excited.
Wait, weren’t you always gluten-free?
Yes! Nothing has changed about our actual meals and ingredients. Freshly has always developed our fresh prepared meals using real, whole, nutrient-dense foods that are naturally gluten-free, like high-quality proteins, healthy fats, nutrient-dense carbohydrates, and veggies of course.
So why get certified?
Since Freshly has always been completely gluten-free, becoming certified was important to us.
Our Co-Founder, Carter Comstock, had this to say: “For those who are following a strict gluten-free diet, it can be hard to eat out because of cross-contamination concerns. With our meals, you know you’re getting gluten-free meals you can trust.”
Gluten-free certification requires an additional step above and beyond FDA’s gluten-free regulations and a stricter standard for those with celiac disease (1% of the population) or gluten sensitivity. All of our suppliers must certify that their ingredients are gluten free, and our facility will be audited regularly to make sure we’re in compliance.
Why is Freshly gluten-free in the first place?
We asked Carter about why he started Freshly with all gluten-free prepared meals. “It was a natural fit with our food philosophy, which eliminates processed foods, sugars, and artificial ingredients from your diet. Eliminating gluten creates more room on your plate for good-for-you foods, like nutrient-dense veggies or complex carbs.”
Let’s back up a bit. What is “gluten” anyway?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains that provides the elastic, glue-like texture to create the fluffy and soft texture you find in bread. It can be hidden in soups, sauces, dressings, and even soy sauce.
I don’t think I have a gluten allergy or intolerance. Can I still eat Freshly?
Definitely! All of the nutrients and fiber found in gluten-containing grains can be found in the types of ingredients we use in our fresh prepared meals, like quinoa, rice, and lots of different veggies.
While gluten is a naturally occurring protein, it can trigger minor irritations in many people’s systems. Eliminating gluten has helped improve digestion, skin appearance, energy levels, and focus for some people. Of course, if you have a specific medical condition or health goal, we always recommend that you work with your doctor to determine if Freshly’s meals are right for you.
Does gluten-free mean healthy?
Unfortunately, many gluten-free products on the market contain highly processed ingredients and additives that are used to help improve the texture or taste. Even junk foods like chips and candy tout that they’re gluten-free, but that doesn’t make them good for you. At Freshly, we’re committed to bringing you delicious gluten-free alternatives without all of the junk.
Does your gluten-free food taste good?
Oh yeah, it does! We believe food that’s good for you should taste good, too.
“We’re showing that you can have your (gluten-free) cake and eat it, too,” Carter says.
